Check authoritative public domain registration records, registrar information, nameservers, domain status flags, and DNSSEC validation via RDAP.
Domain Data Guide & FAQ
Learn how domain registration protocols work, what RDAP is, and how to interpret public lookup records.
What is RDAP?
Registration Data Access Protocol (RDAP) is the official internet standard designed by the IETF and ICANN to replace the traditional WHOIS protocol. Unlike port-43 WHOIS text blobs, RDAP provides machine-readable JSON data, standardized error codes, built-in HTTPS encryption, internationalization support, and tiered access control.
What information does a domain lookup show?
A standard RDAP lookup displays key administrative facts about a domain name, including:
- Sponsoring Registrar: The company where the domain was purchased.
- Important Dates: Registration date, last update timestamp, and expiration date.
- Nameservers: The authoritative DNS servers routing the domain's traffic.
- Domain Status: EPP operational flags (e.g., clientTransferProhibited).
- DNSSEC Status: Indicates whether DNS Security Extensions are signed.
Why is registrant contact information hidden?
Under global data privacy laws like GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) and CCPA, registrars are legally required to redact personal contact information (such as individual name, home address, personal phone number, and personal email) from public lookup directories.
What are EPP Domain Status Flags?
| Status Code | Meaning |
|---|---|
| clientTransferProhibited | Prevents unauthorized domain transfers to another registrar. |
| clientUpdateProhibited | Prevents updates to domain settings or nameservers. |
| clientDeleteProhibited | Prevents the domain from being accidentally deleted. |
| active / ok | The normal operational state for a domain with active DNS. |
